Obagi Nu-Derm: What You Need to Know

The Obagi Nu-Derm System is a seven-piece skincare kit created to treat uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation. The Obagi Nu-Derm System provides a topical solution to dark spots and melasma in the privacy of your own home. When it comes to the Nu-Derm system, one ingredient that really stands out; hydroquinone.

Top of the line ingredients

Obagi Nu-Derm Clear and Obagi Nu-Derm Blender, which are part of the Obagi Nu-Derm System, contain 4% hydroquinone. A prescription is required at that level, so the Obagi Nu-Derm System is available only through doctors' offices. The kit also includes a cleanser, toner, moisturizer, and sunscreen.

The Obagi Nu-Derm System comes in two versions—one for normal to oily skin and another for normal to dry complexions. You can consult your skincare specialist to determine which is the right one for you.

For hydroquinone to take full effect, it usually takes about four weeks. If you haven't seen any improvement after 12 weeks, Obagi recommends discontinuing the products' use. At that point, you'll want to discuss other alternative hyperpigmentation treatments, such as peels, with your skincare specialist. Side effects of hydroquinone include temporary dryness and redness. These usually resolve as your skin adjusts.

Starting a Nu-Derm kit is comparable to creating a rigorous workout routine. There is an adjustment phase in the beginning that can be difficult to push through and stay motivated. Your skin care specialist will have suggestions on how to ease the transition period.
